My Guide to the Eco-Savy Coffee Addict: BYOC

admin | eco-friendly companies, sustainable living | Sunday, July 22nd, 2007
As I enter the eco-conscious world, I have my moments of relapses. At times I might even admit to being downright eco-discouraging.

Every morning I wake up and half asleep make my way to the Tim Hourtins near my house to order my double/double with milk. I get this coffee in the cup provided and make my way to work as my brain defogs and my vision becomes clear. I work for a few hours but before long noon hits and my morning buzz dissapates and I’ve left bonedry and in need of my second fix. Since I’ve already hit Tim Hourtins I make the 15 minute trip to Chapters and read while waiting for my latte to cool.

This happens every day.

Yes I realize that I spend $5.31 every day on beverages alone but I figure i could have a cocaine addiction which would leave me quite poor. So I count my blessings.. (Don’t judge me)

What distubs me most is that I’ve been doing this day in and day out for the last 3 weeks with absolutely no apparent thought to the container that houses my bevy. For the price of a couple of lattes I could have purchased a starbucks cup and perhaps saved a tree or two.

Okay, let’s be honest the 520 coffees purchased a year would probably equal out to a forest by the time I retire.

Once I realized this I immediately purchased my personal travel mug and began using that on a daily basis. I used to use the excuse that I hated drinking out of the plastic for about a billion reasons but the Starbucks cup actually looks like a regular cup so I couldn’t complain. And the 10 cents I save everytime I use the cup isn’t so bad either.

So the next time you hit your local coffee shop, think BYOC and bring your own cup. It’s a small change that you could do so reduce your waste!

Now you’ll have to excuse me while I figure out how to reduce my coffee intake as well..

Introducing ….Talen Events

admin | sustainable living, talen events | Saturday, July 7th, 2007

In an effort to do my part to save the environment and its resources, I’ve decided to embark on a little experiment to change the way I do things in my world and in my work.

Two years ago, myself & my business partner Amalia Ward met on the first day of George Brown’s Event & Meeting Management introductory course. We hit it off instantly, and before long began to envision an event planning firm that was different than the rest. Weddings were our passion, but shows like Rich Bride/Poor Bride were creating a depiction of lavish weddings that seemed too much even for our creative spirits. It was then we decided to dedicate our time and resources to making an event planning firm that is environmentally conscious in an effort to do our part to “green” up our industry and crush the “bridezilla” with its chic & ecofriendly replacement.

So this blog will show our pathway to sustainable living. We can’t say that we have been the most eco-aware individuals, (However, for the record, Amalia is much more environmentally-friendly than myself) It’s not going to be easy but that’s where you can tell us where we’re going wrong, and what we should be doing. More importantly, our goal for this blog is to showcase those of you who have just started or always been environmentally conscious and salute your efforts!

We look forward to meeting you in the future,

Tiffany daSilva & Amalia Ward
