admin | WWF, green news | Thursday, May 7th, 2009

Hi All!

We know there are some out there who been green some or all of their lives, and we congratulate you! We also know that there are some out there who are starting out fresh. For those of you out there who are new to the eco-friendly scene and would like to give their life a sustainability makeover, this is the blog for you! It’s time to take your first step into the green world — by calculating your Carbon Footprint.

Why Calculate your Carbon Footprint?

When you were a kid in school you might have dreaded your report card. Years late you still might get goosebumps at the thougt of a review at work. Have no Fear! Your Carbon Footprint calculator isn’t a stressful activity. I mean, hey you know you might not be the most eco-savvy person in the world but this assessment will allow you a summary or benchmark of where you’re at as well as give you an idea of your first steps of improvement.

Think of this little experience as your first wiegh in. Something that might make you a little nervous for starters but in a couple of months is the perfect benchmark to see how far you’ve come. And we promise, when you calculate how far you’ve come in a few months we won’t tell ANYONE about that pint of Ben & Jerry’s icecream you rewarded yourself with.

There are a dozen carbon footprint calculators out there. So pick one and stick to it. Each are slightly different so make sure you use the same one to measure yourself over time.

So take a look and measure yourself today and welcome to your first day of your new eco-friendly life!

And As Always…

Happy Planning!

New Year’s Resolutions to Help Reduce Waste

admin | WWF, eco-friendly companies, environmental organizations, sustainable living | Wednesday, December 31st, 2008

So it is almost time to make that pesky New Year’s Resolution, some may decide to play it safe with a familiar “lose weight; eat better; spend more time with family” mantra… but not you! You’ve decided to make a resolution to join the environmental revolution (errr.. okay maybe not necessarily join but go to a few meetings?) Either way, even thought it is cold outside there are still a few things that you can do to help reduce waste in 2009.

1. Reduce the Brrrr…

Take the necessary steps to use caulking in any cracks you may see and insulate your windows and reduce the drafts in your house. If your home is airtight you will stay warm this winter.

2. Using your appliances efficiently

Instead of washing your clothes in hot water why not try washing your clothes in cold-water. Also, you can make sure your dishwasher is full before running it and try running it at night.

3. Reduce your waste

Simply bring a resuable shopping bag whenever you shop be it clothing or groceries. Replace your plastic wrap with an air tight container and try to find products with reduced packaging.

Talen Events Celebrates Earth Day

It is a great day to be alive, the sun is shining, the birds are singing and the temperature is just right. As I was picking trash today in a park nearby I got to thinking that today is a great day to take your first steps to make the Earth a better place. We have made enormous strides this year in trying to understand how our everyday activities impact the earth, and how little changes in our behaviour can change things better for the future. From celebrities to the local news everyone is providing tips on how you can start to make your life green and for those of us who are living a green life amp; how to sustain that lifestyle.

The key to get everyone involved is to engage people on some level. As we at Talen Events move along in this journey of trying to find our way to a sustainable lifestyle we are getting involved in our community and learning through others. This past weekend, we had the honor of participating in WWF’s CN Tower Climb and helped to register 5000 climbers who believe in the need to help the environment. While it is absolutely necessary to celebrate the Earth today, I think the time has come to make everyday Earth Day.

WWF CN Tower Climb

admin | WWF, eco-friendly campaigns, eco-friendly events | Tuesday, April 1st, 2008

Didn’t get to participate in the WWF sponsored Earth Hour? Don’t worry! There is still two other ways you can support this amazing charity!

On Saturday April 19th 2008, the WWF is having their 18th annual CN Tower Stair Climb. Feel like getting your climb on? If you’re thinking about it, it just so happens that you could get some great prizes AND the money that you raise goes to support the following initatives:

  • A little government influence that goes a LONG way on behalf of all Canadians
  • Protection for the fragile ecosystems around the world
  • Education for real change
  • Getting the word out to industries and making sure they play their part
  • Help nature survive some not so cool but sadly inevitable warming!

So even if you’re not so much a climber, it’s still a great idea to sponsor someone else or donate to WWF!

Talen Events will be there, helping out so we’d love to see you!

WWF - Looking for the Good Life?

admin | WWF, eco-friendly campaigns, eco-friendly companies, green news | Saturday, January 19th, 2008

The World Wildlife Federation has created an amazing program called The Good Life to track your eco-friendly efforts and the difference your making in your community!

Beyond that, The Good Life will give you some great “green” tips as well as an outlet to interact with other Canadians trying to live more sustainable lives.

“The Good Life” is a community of Canadians who would like to make simple but significant changes in their lifestyles that help fight climate change and reduce their footprint on the planet.

How to get on the Good Life?
1. Go to http://www.thegoodlife.wwf.ca and sign up
2. Check out all the actions that you have taken or plan to take in the near future!
3. Watch as your actions are tracked, and recieve an estimation of the amount of CO2 you have reduced.
4. Pat Yourself on the back as your total is added to the provincial and country wide total to track what we are doing as a nation to reduced greenhouse emissions.

We have taken up the challenge and we are now inviting you to join us in this cause. Don’t forget to invite your friends your co-workers to join. Remember, its the simple steps that will make a difference.. like telling your friends and coworkers what you’ve done to reduce CO2 in your life.

Cheers!
